Team Hogan is Back @ the Pawling Library

Team Hogan is Back @ the Pawling Library

What is Team Hogan? It’s Hogan, a certified therapy dog and Ms. Vicki providing a relaxed reading setting for your reluctant reader! For some young children, one of the big challenges in learning to read is the embarrassment of making mistakes. Reading to dogs provides a simple solution — a non-judgmental, comforting furry friend who “listens” and takes the pressure off children when they read. “Children need a lot of practice to become good readers,” said Ms. Karen, Children’s Services Coordinator at the Pawling Library.  “Sometimes when students practice they misread words and feel uncomfortable.  Therapy dogs provide a risk-free practice session for children to read without the fear or stress of making mistakes. This gives children a chance to relax and focus on practicing their skills.  It can work wonders for new and reluctant readers. Reading with a therapy dog not only reduces anxieties and fears about reading, but it can increase children’s attention span and confidence and motivate them to practice more.” Hogan, our evening literacy canine is a chocolate lab and a...

Daisy Girl Scouts Offer a Lesson in Sharing

Sunday, November 23rd the library was filled with Daisy’s!  The girls of Daisy Troops 10019 & 10291 came to the library with a surprise for the whole community.  The girls had decided to purchase Isabelle, American Girl’s newest doll, and donate it to the Pawling Library.  Daisy Troop 10019 Scout Leader Nicol Furlong told us, “The girls went to New York City on Metro-North November 11th with only one thing in mind…buying a doll to give to the library!  They never asked for anything for themselves.  They knew why they were there and that was all they had in mind.”  The girls had lunch and received a tour of the American Girl store and of course, they purchased their gift to bring back to Pawling.

Miss Christy will be filling in for Miss Karen while she recovers from her eye surgery, and she’s put together a lot of great programs for the kids of Pawling including a Preschool Story Hour and some cool Book Clubs for School Age Kids. Miss Christy has worked in the library on the Military Base at West Point, and currently works with the boys in the library at the Trinity-Pawling School. I think her love for children’s literature will make her a great addition to our library. Lottery Registration for our Fall Programs will begin Monday, September 15th. You can pick up a registration form at the Circulation Desk or you can print one out here: Childrens Fall 2014 Program Registration Form When you return your registration form, you’ll pull a number, which will determine your ranking for Registration. Join us for an Easy Hike!

Sunday, May 18th at 11 am @ Native Landscapes on Rt. 22 We’ll be hiking up to Corbin Hill  to celebrate the Installation of our Little Free Library and the introduction of our Appalachian Trail Backpacks. The Hike will be led by Harlem Valley AT Ambassador, Cassie Kessman, who will teach us about native plants, wild edibles, invasive species, & the AT. The Hike will be approximately two hours roundtrip. The Little Free Library will be located at the Telephone Pioneers Shelter near Cat Rocks, a popular destination for Day Hikers and a camping spot for through-hikers doing more of The Trail.
