As part of the Deeper Than Our Skins series, this month’s book selection is The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano by Sonia Manzano. During this meeting, we will talk about the novel and watch a documentary film, Palente, Siempre Palante! by Iris Morales that will bring the events from the novel to life. The film is described as follows: In the midst of the African American civil rights struggle, protests to end the Vietnam War, and the women’s movement for equality, Puerto Rican and Latino communities fought for economic and social justice. From Chicago streets to the barrios of New York City and other urban centers, the Young Lords emerged to demand decent living conditions and raised a militant voice for the empowerment of the Puerto Rican people in the United States. The film documents the history with on-camera interviews, archival footage, photographs and music. The documentary surveys Puerto Rican history, the Young Lord’s activities and philosopy, the torturous end of the organization and its inspiring legacy.” The film is in English with Spanish subtitles.

The Pawling Library is honored to have been selected as one of 58 libraries nationwide to take part in the Great Stories Club, a reading and discussion program for underserved teens. These competitive grants are offered by the American Library Association (ALA) with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The Library has received two Great Stories Grants and is partnering with Camino al Éxito to bring teens age 13 & up a book discussion series in English & Spanish.

Durante este encuentro hablaremos sobre la novela y veremos un documental, Palente, Siempre Palante! de Iris Morales que dará vida a los acontecimientos de la novela. La película se describe de la siguiente manera: En medio de la lucha de los afroamericanos por los derechos civiles, las protestas para poner fin a la guerra de Vietnam y el movimiento de mujeres por la igualdad, las comunidades puertorriqueña y latina lucharon por la justicia económica y social.
