Battle of the Books Team Meeting

The Pawling Library's Battle of the Books team for middle school students will meet on alternate Mondays to discuss the books and practice trivia questions for this year's competition. The Battle of the Books is a Mid-Hudson Library System-wide program for middle and high school students that celebrates books and reading, team work, and friendly-competition. Great Stories Book Club: Deeper Than Our Skins

As part of the Deeper Than Our Skins series, this month's book selection is The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano by Sonia Manzano. During this meeting, we will talk about the novel and watch a documentary film, Palente, Siempre Palante! by Iris Morales that will bring the events from the novel to life. The film is described as follows: In the midst of the African American civil rights struggle, protests to end the Vietnam War, and the women's movement for equality, Puerto Rican and Latino communities fought for economic and social justice. From Chicago streets to the barrios of New York City and other urban centers, the Young Lords emerged to demand decent living conditions and raised a militant voice for the empowerment of the Puerto Rican people in the United States. The film documents the history with on-camera interviews, archival footage, photographs and music. The documentary surveys Puerto Rican history, the Young Lord's activities and philosopy, the torturous end of the organization and its inspiring legacy."
