Congratulations to Megan, Joseph & Meredith our latest family to read 1,000 books together! They are part of our Read Together Program where families are encouraged to read regularly together in order to “plant the seeds of literacy” in their children. Megan felt the whole family enjoyed this program, “I’m not sure who had more fun completing this challenge, me or the kids! We read every book we could find featuring their most beloved characters and also gave unknown authors a try, and we discovered a few new favorites along the way. I loved that the kids were so content to make even more time in our day to read besides the usual bedtime stories and that they knew that they were making all of the librarians they know (Mom included!) so proud.” You can read more about this program on our web site. Families can sign up to participate in our Read Together Program by contacting Ms. Karen. “We’ll give you your reading log folder, your first log page and information about the program,...

Senator Terrance Murphy visited the Pawling library on Wednesday, August 10th, at 11 am. The library received Bullet Aid funds from Senator Murphy last fall and he scheduled this visit to see first-hand how the funds were used. Karen De Gennaro, Children’s Services Coordinator, was on hand to share the Senator many of the family science materials that were purchased with the grant funds. Ms. Karen chatted briefly with him about the importance of the supplies purchased with the funds. “These materials are in constant use in our children’s programs and in our evening family science programs. They complement our literacy program, allow us to add STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Math] to our programs and give the children the opportunity to experience science inquiry first hand. The children love hearing about science concepts when we read about them in books, but nothing takes the place of experiencing science inquiry in action.” Along with Ms. De Gennaro, Pawling Library board members Verna Carey and Nick Robertshaw and interim Director Donald Partelow were there to greet...

If your child is 2 ½ – 3 ½ years old and you are looking for a language rich literacy program to attend, then look no further! The Pawling Library has the perfect program. Dynamic Duos is a weekly parent and child program that introduces children to group literacy programs with 45 minute sessions that develop critical early literacy and language skills that are important to your child’s future reading success. During the program, we’ll listen to books, discuss what’s happening in the story, talk about important story words, engage the children in listen and think activities and we even use rhythm instruments to encourage movement, sensitivity to word parts and rhyming! We always end with a development activity that encourages socializing, fine motor development, language skills and vocabulary. The five recommended activities to develop early literacy skills are read, talk, play, sing and write and we use four of these activities every week! Dynamic Duos takes place on Tuesdays, 11 – 11:45 am. Can’t make it on Tuesdays? The same program is offered on...
