Heroes Abound at the Pawling Library’s Superhero Power Hour

Heroes Abound at the Pawling Library’s Superhero Power Hour

Where could our heroes of summer find a chance to fight fires, save superheroes, battle zombies and help patients?  At Superhero Power Hour, of course!  Our summer of heroic reading ended with bang with our Superhero Power Hour Family Carnival, hosted by our 26 Fun Team members.  77 children and 52 adults were treated to an awesome afternoon of fun and games.  The event ended with ice cream sundaes for everyone and our raffle drawings.  What a day!

Come See the Lego Museum on Display at the Library!

We’re so proud of Ms. Karen’s builders and engineers. They’ve been hard at work all summer building mazes, superheroes, and even Tooth-Gnasher Superflashes. Take a look at what they came up with! Our Books and Blocks builders made superheroes out of Lego® blocks after reading Ten Rules of Being a Superhero by Deb Pilutti, built their own versions of Tooth-Gnasher Superflash after reading Daniel Pinkwater’s book of the same name and ended the summer building some amazing trucks after reading Supertruck by Stephen Savage. Books and Blocks is our builder’s club for students entering grades K – 2. They begin by reading a book with a central theme, listening carefully for building ideas. Then, they put their imaginations into high gear to create different kinds of structures. Program challenges are designed to guide students to think about their structures and build within a specified criterion. Our Lego Engineers in Brilliant Brains and Blocks were challenged to create a simple machine, build a vehicle that could attach to a wire and travel 18 feet and last of all,...

Local Heroes visit the Library

Local Heroes visit the Library

Local heroes, Deputy Sheriff O’Brien and Libby, came out today to demonstrate Libby’s amazing ability to sniff out the causes of fires. We all learned about Libby’s amazing olfactory capabilities, and the training the human-canine duo underwent to become part of the Dutchess County Sheriffs’ K-9 Team. Libby even stuck around for some belly rubs after the presentation. Thanks to Deputy Sheriff O’Brien and Libby for taking the time out to talk to us!

Summer’s not over yet! Get out of town and get some culture with our museum passes!

PFL Heroes are Helping Others

Libraries across NY State are promoting this summer’s reading theme Every Hero Has a Story….but there are many ways to be a hero and each library has it own take on the theme. Here at the Pawling Library we’re working hard to help children start their own hero story!  Among our many heroic programs is a community service program where we recruited a few great heroes to help us perform some very kind deeds.  Our PFL Heroes in Training (grades K – 2) and our PFL Heroes Clubs (grades 3 – 5) are working hard to make a difference in our own community.  We partnered with the Pawling Resource Center and asked how we could help.  We discovered that while community members often think of donating food to the center, personal hygiene products are always in short supply! Our PFL heroes took on the challenge of collecting these desperately needed supplies.  We have asked families in our programs to donate soap, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste and place them in specially marked boxes in the library.

PFL’s Heroes Need Your Help!

The Pawling Library’s Heroes Clubs want to help the Pawling Resource Center help others. Please help us by donating: soap deodorant toothpaste toothbrushes Collection boxes are in the library and all donations are gratefully accepted. Help us make a difference in the lives of others.

The Blue Olive visits the Pawling Library

John Canevari conducted an Olive Oil and Vinegar tasting seminar on Tuesday, June 30th to an enthusiastic audience. Many lucky people were able to taste and learn how to prepare a delicious Cilantro-Lime Marinade, Mango Salsa, Mediterranean Pasta Salad and Blue Olive Pesto. We thank you, our neighbors at the Blue Olive, for an immensely enjoyable presentation, and we look forward to your return.
