Battle of the Books Returns: Teams now forming!

The Pawling Library will once again participate in the Mid-Hudson Battle of the Books program for 2022. Battle of the Books is a program for middle school and high school students. The program is open to all students in currently in grades 4 through 11. Team members will receive their own copies of the books which we’ll read throughout the spring and summer. The team will then participate in trivia battles based on the books with teams from other libraries. If you love reading and enjoy friendly competition, we’d love to have you on the team! Second Saturday Stories

This creative writing group will meet once a month on the second Saturday, beginning March 12 at 11 AM. Using prompts and other starters, participants will use their imaginations to create short stories. Young Adult Program Coordinator, Maureen Meltzer-McGrath, will use her background as a former magazine editor, to lead this program for 8th grade & up. To be held in the Annex. As an explorer, you’ve always dreamed of adventuring through Egypt. It’s where your great-grandfather, Howard Carter, discovered the remains of the ancient pharaoh Tutankhamen. But he had a secret–something he never told anyone other than you. He believed there was another tomb connected to the first. A hidden tomb. A Lost Mummy. Explorers in grade 6 & up are invited to join us for this in-person event on Friday, February 25th at 6:00 pm. This program involves a series of puzzles to solve with the aid of Howard Carter’s diary. If you are able to solve all the puzzles and escape the tomb, you can win a prize! Sunday, 2/13, 12:00 PM & 5:00 PM All ages welcome, best for families with children six and under Laurie Berkner, Hudson Valley resident and mega-star of the children’s music scene is hosting an interactive Virtual Concert this Valentine’s Day. She’s been on Nickelodeon, toured the US, and written hits like “We are the Dinosaurs” and “I’m Gonna Catch You.” To help support at-home learning this winter, the Pawling Free Library will be providing a limited number of virtual concert tickets to local families. To reserve a ticket, click here.  You will need an internet connected device to stream the concert remotely. Only one ticket per family; one ticket includes access to both concert times for one device and should be enough for the whole family. While she was cataloging the artwork housed inside of the Hartley Dodge Memorial she uncovered a masterpiece that had been lost to the art world since the 1930’s. After a year of research, the piece was authenticated as an official work by Auguste Rodin. Mallory will share the story of how a simple art cataloging project evolved into a search for a mysterious piece’s provenance, and became one of the biggest art finds in recent history. About our presenter: Mallory Mortillaro serves as the Curator of Collections for the Hartley Dodge Foundation.
