Our Children’s department hosts programming for children and families from birth through elementary school, all free, educationally focused, and fun! This summer, our programming slate includes in-person programming, take home activity kits, and digital events. The sanctuary currently has 110 animals, including goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, turkeys, donkeys, and horses. The farm’s cofounders, Ellen and Bill Crain, will tell the stories of some of the animals. The program will be of interest to children as well as adults. About our presenters: Ellen Crain is a retired pediatrician. She is a professor emerita at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Bill Crain is a professor of psychology at The City College of New York. He is the author of The Emotional Lives of Animals and Children: Insights from a Farm Sanctuary. This summer, get involved in our community! Below are library volunteering opportunities for kids and teens. Included: Book Buddy Volunteers needed, Reading as service!, Garden Volunteering, and Project Do Something Become a Book Buddy! For ages 11- 20 We are currently accepting volunteer applications for our Book Buddy program. Teens and tweens ages 11-18 can apply to become reading buddies to our community’s younger, developing readers. Volunteers will be paired with an elementary aged student, whom they will assist in practicing their reading skills, as well as read aloud to. Schedule: Virtually over Zoom, Mondays, 7/12-8/21, 2:20 – 3:00 PM Applicants need strong reading skills and to be available for at least three of the six dates of the program. The Pawling Library is hosting a free jazz concert on the Village Green on Saturday May 22nd, 1-3 PM. Why is the Pawling Library kicking off its year-long centennial celebration with a New Orleans Jazz band? Because in 1921, when the library received its Charter from the New York State Board of Education, what was known then as Dixieland Jazz, was all the rage all over the country! In the early twentieth century, the Great Migration of talented Black and Creole musicians who left New Orleans to seek a better life in the north, brought this vibrant musical genre to Chicago, Philadelphia and New York. And what better way to celebrate our one hundred years of service to our community than to shout out our excitement with this “brassy” introduction to our thrilling year of programming and events brought to you by the generosity of the Oliver S. and Jennie R. No more April-fooling around! The full schedule of Spring Children’s programs for children ten and under is now available! We’re continuing to offer our popular activity kit programs, as well as digital events on Zoom and Facebook Live. Starting in May, we’re also introducing our first outdoor, socially distanced programs for children under five and their caregivers! Registration is now open for our Winter 2021 children’s programs. The program session will run nine weeks, January 26th – March 26th. This session, we’ll be offering a variety of At-home kit activities and live digital programs on Zoom. Upcoming special events include a taste-safe sensory exploration kit for ages six months to five years and the return of our LEGO and Roblox Clubs. This program has been rescheduled for December 12, 2020, due to inclement weather. December 5th, 2020, by reservation only Get ready to bundle up and share your wish lists! Our annual visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus is ON! But… it is going to look a little different this year. To keep all involved as safe as possible, families will visit outside, one at time, while Santa and Mrs. Claus stay inside and chat through a window. Registration for 10 minute windows is required.
