Meet a Ballerina Story Hour

Friday, 2/28, 1:00-2:00 pm Local ballerina, dance teacher, and reading role model Rachel Hamdan will stop by the library for a very special story hour. She will bring costumes, shoes, and go over a few basic moves with attendees. In addition, she will read a favorite dancing story book and discuss why she LOVES to read! We suggest families discuss what questions kids may want to ask Rachel, as there will be time for Q&A. Caregivers are required to remain in the library for the duration of the program. Meet a Veterinarian

Meet a Veterinarian Wednesday, 1/15, 1:00-2:00 pm Dr. Kanouse, a local veterinarian from Brook Farm Veterinary Center, will stop in with his therapy dog, Nettles. Dr. Kanouse will read a story, answer questions about animal care and his job, and give children the opportunity to interact with his four legged friend and some of his tools. The Wonderful World of Bats!

Wednesday, 10/9, from 11:00-12:00 pm Bat educator Jerry Schneider will introduce us to the exotic world of bats and echolocation. Children will create unique bat t-shirts, using a combination of fabric dye sprays, plants, and cut outs. Children may purchase white t-shirts for $4.00, or bring their own. Fall Children’s Registration OPEN

Registration is now open for Fall 2019 Children’s Programs. Low cost, educational programs are available for children birth-fourth grade. Fall will run nine weeks from September 23-November 23, with special December programs to follow, including Santa’s visit. Lottery registration will run September 9-16, with rolling registration to follow as space is available. Ready for Kindergarten!

Ready for Kindergarten is an upcoming free program, open to any child entering kindergarten this September. Thursday, August 22, 1:00 – 2:00 pm  – Ms. Neena Let’s get excited for the first day of school! We’ll sing songs, read stories, and do activities–all related to kindergarten. Children will meet other kindergartners and boost their excitement for starting school! Parents and caregivers not required, but welcome.  Registration is preferred. Music and Movement with Tara Micale

We are excited to announce Musical Munchkins and Tuneful Tykes, featuring special guest musician and teacher, Tara Micale! These special music and movement classes will help support literacy learning and keep families smiling throughout the hot summer! All classes are free, and drop ins are welcome. Musical Munchkins classes are for “walkers” (any child who can stand and toddle on their own) to 2 years old, and Tuneful Tykes is for children 2-3 years old. The first class will be Saturday, July 27th. Second classes will be August 10th. Musical Muchkins: 10:00-10:30 am Tuneful Tykes: 10:35 – 11:15 am Families can attend one or both dates. Program includes songs, fine and gross motor, and musical development. Ms. Tara is a trained music educator, currently pursuing her degree at the The Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT. Summer Reading Challenge

Our Summer Reading Challenge is now underway! Readers of any age are invited to join in and help our community unlock awesome prizes, like baseball tickets and a Ozobot robot for check out. As of July 1, 2019, participants have collectively read: 191 minutes. We’ve only got until the end of August to reach 10,000 minutes read. Volunteer Interns and Leadership Interns

Are you interested in volunteering with children or interested in children’s books? We have opportunities for teens and adults ages 12 and up to volunteers with the children’s department year round. During the summer, we offer many area teens the opportunity to volunteer with kids. There’s even the opportunity to make a little money as a Leadership intern! Register for Spring Children’s Programs

From baby and toddler story hours to STEAM clubs to slime workshops, our Spring schedule is full of fun and educational children’s programs. For your best chance to join the fun, register during our lottery registration period, STARTING TODAY, March 28! Even if you’ve been part of our programs before, everyone must register to continue with programs. Lottery registration ends April 3 with rolling registration, as space is available to follow. Spring Children’s Programs begin April 8th. Programs run eight weeks, April 8-June 1st.  

Check out our Spanish Leveled Readers!

We are excited to announce the launch of the complete Spanish Leveled Readers book collection in the Pawling Library! This collection is designed for anyone learning to read in Spanish, no matter the age. This collection of over 100 children’s books has been organized using the same program that the Pawling School district uses to level books for student reading. New readers start at Level A, with short stories using simple vocabulary, and work their way through the alphabet. The collection features books in levels A-M using the Fountas and Pinnell leveling system. Many of the books are bilingual, in Spanish and English, and are a great tool for continuing Spanish or bilingual language literacy. “We added the collection because we want our community to know that language literacy is important no matter what language you speak.
