Dudes and Kids Day- Let’s Make Reading Fun!

Saturday, 3/10 5:30-6:30 pm – Ms. Neena, Main Library Caregivers and children ages 4-8 are invited to participate in a series of challenges together, all of which aim to boost their reading skills. Have fun together completing tasks and competing, either against each other or together to reach the highest score! Whether just learning letters or reading whole books, this evening will provide families with fun, easy to reproduce tools that they can use at home to keep reading skills sharp! Meet the Author and the Illustrator

Holmes resident and local author Jennifer Lohrfink Morfea and illustrator Erik Draw stop by the library to read their book, The Little Hyena. The event includes a Q&A, and Erik will demonstrate his illustration techniques live. Attendees will have the chance to win signed copies of their books and participate in a fun animal art project, led by the author. Children K-4 and their families are welcome to attend. Caregivers invited, but not required. Join us and support your local community–Saturday, January 27th, 4:30-5:30 pm. Registration not required but preferred. Fall Children’s Programs Registration Open Now

Now that the school year is in full swing and the leaves have begun to change, we’re starting back up with the Fall season of Children’s Programs. Registration opens today and will run through September 19th. If you miss this window, don’t worry! You can still sign up for programs as space is available. To enter our lottery for program placement, download and fill out our Fall Registration Form at https://www.pawlingfreelibrary.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/PFL-Fall-2017-Childrens-Registration.pdf. You can return it to the library by fax, email (at children@pawlinglibrary.org), or by returning it in person at the circulation desk. The circulation desk will also have copies of the form on hand for you to fill out if you stop by to register for the lottery in person. Summer Reading Rally Winners to be Announced!

Calling all Summer Reading Rally Participants! Our competition has ended and it is time to find out which team read the most this summer. Will the Red Hot Kid Readers keep their championship status, or will the teens or adults prove to be the champions? End of Summer Celebrations!

We have entered the final week of summer children’s programs. To celebrate the end of a fantastic summer, we will be holding not one but TWO celebrations! Join Ms. Neena and Ms. Martina for the last two events of the summer–The End of Summer Carnival and The Solar Eclipse Picnic. End of Summer Carnival: (Sunday, August 20th, 1-3 pm): All summer, the teens and families of Pawling have been working hard with Kate and Martina to create a family friendly carnival. Come celebrate the end of the summer with a celebration the whole library is in on! We will also have tons of prizes and snacks for all to enjoy. Solar Eclipse Picnic: (Monday, August 21st, 1-4 pm): The Great American Solar Eclipse is August 21st. Join us for our viewing event and some fun suitable for all ages. While we observe the phases of the eclipse, we’ll make our own Solar Eclipse book to take home. Popsicle Party

On Thursday June 15th the Pawling Library will host a popsicle party for the families of Pawling. This will be an opportunity for you to meet our new children’s program team, Neena McBaer and Martina Marchese. Feel free to drop by any time between 4 and 5 PM in order to meet Neena and Martina and to have a popsicle. We will also have crayons and Legos out for the children (and adults!) to use. If you are able to RSVP in advance (by emailing children@pawlinglibrary.org), it would help us figure out how many popsicles to buy. If you are not able to RSVP, please come anyway! If you have any questions about the children’s summer programs or about registration, Miss Neena will be on hand to answer them. Remember that registration for summer programs will take place June 13th through June 19th. Applications can be downloaded here or picked up at the library.

The Bergdall Family Grows a Reader

Congratulations to the Bergdall family who was just added to our Read Together Wall of Fame! The Bergdalls read 1,000 books as they participated in our Read Together Program where families are encouraged to “plant the seeds of literacy” by reading regularly to their children at home.  Gina & Rob Bergdall were happy their family participated in the program.  “Reading together is one of our favorite activities. We enjoyed seeing how excited our son was to get new books from the library.”  In addition to reading, there are other ways to help give your child a great start. Talking, singing, reading, playing and writing all help develop your child’s growing early literacy skills. You can read more about this program on our web site. It’s Hard to Say Goodbye

It is with much emotion that the Pawling Library announces the departure of our longtime Children’s Program Coordinator, and friend, Karen DeGennaro. The library is grateful for Ms. Karen’s dedication to our library family, and to the families she has served for the last nine years. Under her guidance, our children’s programming has grown by leaps and bounds, and thanks to Ms. Karen, our library’s youngest patrons have gained a strong foundation in early literacy. Since 2010, Ms. Karen has been steadily growing the library’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) programming with innovative classes that encourage youngsters to explore, tinker, and be curious about the world in which they live. With the solid foundation that Ms. Karen has brought to our children’s programming, The Pawling Library will continue with and build upon these inventive, cutting edge classes. We firmly believe that today’s explorers become tomorrow’s inventors, creators, scientists and leaders. Rainbows Abound at the Pawling Library!

29 junior scientists and their parents joined Ms. Karen on Friday evening to explore color at the Pawling Library’s Family Science program So Many Colors in the Rainbow.  “We looked at colors and mixing colors in lots of ways using over 12 different hands-on activities.  This was an opportunity for children to ask questions about colors and find out the answers on their own,” said Ms. Karen.  “We explored sophisticated topics like chromatography, diffraction, the capillary action of water and osmosis in simple, fun and colorful ways.” We even grew our own rainbow!

The Fritts Family Grows a Reader!
