This special presentation will take place at the Holmes Whaley Lake Civic Association. The HWLCA is located at 239 Route 292 in Holmes, NY. http://www.hwlca.com/

All participants will have the opportunity to read their essays with a discussion led by Dr. Robin Lester, author and former headmaster of the Trinity School in New York City.

Special thanks to our juror Thomas Walogorsky,editor of The Pawling Record.

Inspired by the PBS documentary American Creed, this writing contest asked young writers to examine the question, “Who gets to be counted as ‘American’ and why?” The film can be viewed at americancreed.org

$100.00 cash prize will be awarded for 1st place.
$50.00 2nd place.
$25.00 3rd place.

Winners will be notified on Sunday, April 13.

All winning essays will be published in The Pawling Record.

About our speaker: Robin Lester is a graduate of the University of Chicago where he earned his Ph.D. in history and went on to become an award winning historian. In 1996 he was awarded Book of the Year by The North American Society for Sport History for his book STAGG'S UNIVERSITY: The Rise, Decline, and Fall of Big-Time Football at Chicago. His writing has appeared in such publications as the Journal of American History, the Journal of Sports History, and The New York Times. In his youth he was a semi-finalist in the national VFW, Veterans of Foreign Wars, essay contest.

  • Middle School Battle of the Books Meeting

    The middle school Battle of the Books team will meet on alternate Mondays at 5 pm in the Library Annex. This team is open to students currently in 4 through 8th grades.

    Battle of the Books is a Mid-Hudson Library System-wide program that introduces participants great books, teamwork, and friendly competition. The Regional Battle is to be held between 9/8 - 9/11. The Final Battle will be held on Saturday, 9/16.

    This program welcomes middle-school-age homeschoolers to get together and socialize while we play games, do art activities, and complete learning challenges.This season's theme is Robotics.     This monthly program is for families who home-school to give their elementary- and middle-school-aged students an opportunity to practice public speaking. Led by Katrina Bronnimann, each meeting will have a theme from which attendees can choice their speaking topic. The themes for the spring session:

    May 25th: Animals

    June 19th: Geography/Travel (Please note this session takes place on Monday)

  • Volunteens

    This is a year-round volunteer opportunity for ages 11 & up. The group will meet twice a month to plan or work on service projects to benefit the Library and the Pawling community.

    Meeting dates: The first and third Wednesday of each month at 5 pm to 6:30 pm. There may be additional dates depending on the project. Registration is requested. Please note, the registration link will only display the final date for the program. However, this program will run from September to June.

    The Pawling Library is now a Volunteer Certification Organization through the Points of Light Organization. Volunteers who meet the required annual hours for their age group will be recognized with a letter from the President of the United States and possibly other awards.
