Community Book Read: The Mysterious Affair at Styles with Stephanie Rogers / Online Program

For this program we are not only commemorating our library’s anniversary but bringing people together through their passion for great literary works. We have selected four classic novels, one for each season, that were popular in the 1920s when our library first came into being. Our presenter, Stephanie Rogers, will be reading an excerpt from each novel and then lead a Q & A for our audience. Stephanie Rogers is the author of The Horse I Belong To: How a Misused and Almost Forgotten Grade Mare Showed Me the Way. Family Block Party: Celebrate the end of summer!

Summer programs have come to a close, so join us for our end of summer celebration! Wizard of Oz Family Block Party: Saturday, August 28th, 12:30 – 3:00 PM Lakeside Park: 2 Lakeside Drive Pawling, New York 12564 Join us under the Lakeside pavilion for a free event featuring bouncy castle, rainbow water play area, dunk tank, crafts, lawn games, snacks, and a prize raffle for major prizes like local gift cards, toys, and a Kindle Fire. There will be a Wizard of Oz themed costume contest, which all ages are welcome to join!  No registration is required, so stop by and play with us, even if only for a little while! Thank you to the Donaldson Trust and Pawling Centennial Committee for sponsoring this event.

Thank you Summer Readers!

WOW! Thank you to our Tails and Tales Summer Readers who read over 33,000 minutes (550 hours) this summer to earn our library a new marketplace learning center!   Plus, the Kid’s Team Won the Reading Challenge! The marketplace is now available for families to use in our children’s area. It is designed to help our preschool and toddler patrons learn through play and will feature rotating themes of play such as grocery store, tools and repair, and a flower shop. The repair shop is open now, with alphabet locks, gears, and a pint-sized tool box. Stop by and check it out! To wrap up the program: At the close of our six week Tails and Tales Summer Reading Challenge, the kid’s team won the Summer Reading Crown for the second summer in a row! Congrats to everyone on the kid’s team who each earned an extra raffle ticket for our big prize raffle and bragging rights as the reading champions!

Summer Reading Update: Almost at Community Goal!

The Tails and Tales Summer Reading Challenge is well underway. In fact, we have almost met our community goal!  With a group total of 19,708 minutes, we need just a little more help to earn our new kid’s area play set. Here are the team standings: Image is of three cats looking at a fishbowl. The colors on their tails show how much progress each team has made logging reading time. From left to right the cats are adults, kids, and teens. First Place: Kids (12, 214 minutes) Second Place: Adults (6,975 minutes) Third Place: Teens (519 minutes) Great things happen when we work together! When we hit 20,000, we will earn our community prize, plus new raffle prizes will be added to the pot for you to win, like gift cards to McKinney and Doyle. The more you read, the more you earn, including free books to keep! Plus, the winning team will earn bragging rights and the Summer Reading Champions Crown. Kids Take the Lead in Summer Reading Challenge

BIG NEWS! The Kids (ages 0-10) now lead in our Tails and Tales Summer Reading Challenge!  What age group can read the most this summer? Here are the standings: First Place: Kids (6,205 minutes) Second Place: Adults (2,960 minutes) Third Place: Teens (300 minutes) Together, our community has read 9,465 minutes this summer! We’re almost halfway to our goal of 20,000 minutes! Keep up the great work! Want to get involved and help your team? Want to win free books and other prizes? Join the contest by logging the time you spend reading and learning this summer. You can log online here, print a paper reading log, or pick one up from the library front desk.

Tails and Tales Summer Learning Challenge Are you looking for a way to keep yourself or your family engaged in reading over the summer break? Curious about how you can make a difference in our community without leaving home? Maybe you’re competitive and really want to win prizes or earn brag tags to show off your reading progress. Whatever your motivation, our summer reading program can meet your needs! Want competition? Minutes read between June 21 and August 21 will be logged for three teams, the kids, teens, and adults! The team that reads the most minutes will be crowned Summer Reading Champions, and earn extra raffle tickets for the awesome prizes we’re giving away, like a Kindle Fire and local gift cards. Youth readers will also earn brag tags and prizes like tickets to Danbury Westerners games and books. Want to help the community? Lakeside Park is Friendly to Readers

Recent visitors to Lakeside Park may have discovered a new landmark: a Little Free Library. This box was the handiwork of local Boy Scouts. Park visitors are encouraged to take a book that they are interested in reading, and to leave behind one that they have already finished. If you like the new Little Free Library, you can thank Julian, Sean, and Levi from the Boy Scouts for putting it together and the Town of Pawling for their support.

Vaccine available in Dover

Wednesday June 9th, Dutchess County will be administering the Johnson and Johnson Covid-19 vaccine at 3081 Route 22 in Dover. Walkins are welcome, but registration is always appreciated. Centennial Jazz Concert

The Pawling Library is hosting a free jazz concert on the Village Green on Saturday May 22nd, 1-3 PM. Why is the Pawling Library kicking off its year-long centennial celebration with a New Orleans Jazz band? Because in 1921, when the library received its Charter from the New York State Board of Education, what was known then as Dixieland Jazz, was all the rage all over the country! In the early twentieth century, the Great Migration of talented Black and Creole musicians who left New Orleans to seek a better life in the north, brought this vibrant musical genre to Chicago, Philadelphia and New York. And what better way to celebrate our one hundred years of service to our community than to shout out our excitement with this “brassy” introduction to our thrilling year of programming and events brought to you by the generosity of the Oliver S. and Jennie R.
