STEAM Kits: Oil Spill Cleanup (Grades K-4)

STEAM Kits: Oil Spill Cleanup Age Range: Grades K-4 and a caregiver Date: Kits available for pickup the week of April 22. Our staff will notify you by email when kits are ready for pickup. This Earth Day, we’re challenging families to use engineering to help the planet. This activity kit includes educational information on water pollution, as well as a hands on experiment. Can your family creatively and quickly clear the water after a dangerous oil spill? Play & learn offline as a family or use our video tutorials for guided learning. Kits are designed so you can use them at home on your schedule. Developing readers may need support to complete the program. Click here to register. Kits are available to anyone who can come to our library to pick up the materials, and quarantined for 48 hours after packing, in accordance to our COVID-19 response policies. Activity Kit and Tutorial Available for pickup week of 3/1 – Miss Neena We’ll give you all the supplies you’ll need to create your own metallic gold/silver slime at home. A video tutorial, led by our staff will be included, or you can do the activity offline with paper instructions. This may get messy, so we suggest clothes that can get stained. Register here. Grades K-4 and families Activity Kit and Tutorial Available Week of 2/2 -Miss Neena Paper circuits create cards with small LEDs that light up. This kit includes all the materials your family will need to make a light up card that can be given as a Valentine’s gift, sent as a thank you, or kept! Follow our paper or video tutorials that explain the science. It is suggested that children and caregivers do this activity together. Register here. Kit pickup is Tuesday-Sunday. Saturday, 10/03, 2:00 – 2:45 pm – Live on Zoom Local author and leader in education, Obed Figueroa, recently released the book Marcus Learns About the Different Types of Doctors. The story takes the title character (and readers!)  through a community health center, where Marcus meets many different healthcare professionals, and learns about how they help his community. Join us for a Live Zoom with the author, who will read from the book, show off some real tools doctors use every day, and answer questions about doctors’ lives. Registration required. Live on Zoom ; Alternating Tuesdays (9/29, 10/13, 10/27, & 11/10)  4:00-5:00 pm – Phil Scratch JR is an easy coding program designed specifically for children ages 5-7 to create interactive art and games, all while learning to code. Phil will teach introductory skills. A computer or tablet with internet access is needed to access Scratch. This program alternates with Scratch coding for grades 2-4. Registration required. Alternating Wednesdays  (7/8, 7/22, 8/5 ) 1:00-2:00 pm –Live via Zoom –Ms. Carla Roblox is a super popular online game that allows kids to make and share games they have created. Under the supervision of our programming staff, kids will interact virtually in a world of their creation! Educationally, both coding skills and computer science skills are developed.
