Core Literacy: Superstar Readers (Grades K-2)

Thursdays, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, Main Library, Courtyard, and Annex – Ms. Carla Superstar Readers are children entering grades K-2 who are ready to rock! Our Core Literacy Programs are designed to promote reading and a love for learning. Each week, students will have the chance to take part in stories, songs, games, and art projects based on our summer theme “Libraries Rock!” Each session includes time for a quick snack break, so families who are able should send a small snack and water bottle each week.   Interested in joining? Pairs school-age readers with teen volunteers trained to assist in literacy assistance. Family STEAM: LEGO Competition (Ages 4+ and a caregiver)

Saturday, 6/2, 10:30 am-12:00 pm -Ms. Neena, Annex Do you love to build? All are all invited to participate in our LEGO competition! Each participant will be given one hour to build with library LEGOs to the theme “Here’s the story,” either alone or as a team. Creations should be inspired by specific books, movies, or TV shows. Attendees will vote for their favorite creations across several age-related categories, including Preschool, Grades K-1, Grades 2-4, and Grades 5-Adult. Winners will be awarded LEGO Shop Gift Cards. Friday 10/27 6:30-7:30 pm Many American families, as well as families in Mexico and South America celebrate a holiday called Día de los Muertos or Día de los Difuntos. These celebrations honor people who have died and mean a great deal to the families that celebrate. This program explores the rich history and traditions of the holiday for those who celebrate and those who wish to learn more about another culture.

“Fall into Reading” Literacy Series: Grades 1-2

Every other Thursday, (10/5, 10/19, 11/2, and 11/16) 4:00-5:30 pm Falling into reading is kind of like falling in a big pile of leaves—it’s fearless and fun! This series of programs encourages the budding creative writer in all of us to come out with inspiring stories and activities meant to generate creative and critical thought. Selected topics vary by age but includes “Fantastic Flashlight Forts,” “All about Dinosaurs” and “Mysterious Tales” among others.

Every other Thursday, (9/28, 10/12, 10/26, and 11/9) 4:00-5:30 pm Experimentation is key to STEAM and to critical thinking. Hands-On STEM allows children the opportunity not just to learn about science and math but to experience it! Each week, the program tackles a hard to understand concept and makes it more understandable with hands-on projects. Topics include “Understanding Weather” with tornados in a jar and SPOOOOKY Halloween science!
