Meet a Mermaid Storytime (All ages and a caregiver) Saturday, 7/16, 1:30 – 2:30 PM PROGRAM HELD OFFSITE: Lakeside Park, 2 Lakeside Dr. Pawling, NY 12564 Stop by the Lakeside beach for our special mermaid meeting. Our mermaid friends will read, sing, and play with us, as well as provide opportunities for meet-and-greets. This program is part of our Literacy Heroes series and sponsored in part by Dutchess County and Pawling Recreation. The Literacy Heroes series aims to inspire youth to practice the keys to early literacy from a young age by providing opportunities for them to meet and interact with awesome characters and artists who love to practice these skills. Make Me an Author (AT HOME Kits!) (Grades K-5 and a caregiver) Kit available for pick up in mid-July. Return by August 20th to have your book published. This summer, kids and families have the opportunity to write, illustrate, and publish a real book! With writing support from at-home caregivers, kids can craft their own story. Then, using drawings, photos, or other art, kids will illustrate their work. Return your final draft to the library and we’ll take care of the rest! In order to be published by the library, the story will need to address one of the following themes: anti-bullying, overcoming challenges, or coping with big feelings. Each participant will receive a bound version of their book to keep. Partially funded by the Dutchess County Office of Children and Family Services. Registration required. Oceans of Possibility Summer Reading Baseball Raffle (All ages, grown-ups included!) Start your summer reading early! Log your reading and collect raffle tickets before 7/15 for your chance to win tickets to Hudson Valley Renegades or Danbury Westerners Games for the whole family. We’ll pull winners for the baseball raffle on 7/15/2022! Two lucky participants will win a family four-pack of tickets to a Hudson Valley Renegades game. This prize includes tickets and team caps for any available home Renegades game in Wappingers Falls, NY. This MiBL Yankee Affiliate team puts on family-friendly games at Dutchess Stadium, often including fireworks and kids’ competitions! 20 or more participants will win tickets family pack tickets to see the Danbury Westerners play at Rogers Park in Danbury. The Westerners were the NECBL Champions in 2021 and with the park so close to home, it’s an easy outing for the family. Participants do not have to be present to win. To participate, a caregiver must pick each kit up from the library once they are available. Families can register for all the weeks or individual weeks. Our staff will email registrants weekly once each kit is available. Kits are made to order and registration is required. Each week, pick up a new kit including everything you need to turn your home into a science lab. Some experiments may be messy. Caregiver oversight is recommended. The libraries of Dutchess and Putnam counties are joining together for a open mic talent night for tweens & teens. To be held at the Patterson Library, outdoors, weather-permitting. All talents are welcome: sing, dance, play music, gymnastics, magic, etc. Ages 6 through 12 years should arrive at 5 pm. Ages 13 through 21 years should arrive at 6 pm. About our presenter: Julie Johns is a licensed Acupuncturist. She is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. She earned a MS degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and a BS degree in Health Sciences in a three-year program at Mercy College which focused on acupuncture, theory of oriental medicine, Chinese herbology, health sciences, and clinical experience. Her first career was as a research assistant in two basic research laboratories, one at Stanford Medical School and the other at Weill Cornell Medical College. These experiences along with the BA degree in Biology she received from the University of California, Santa Cruz gave her a good grounding in science and the theories of allopathic (western) medicine. Julie Johns has her own practice which is located in the village of Pawling, NY.
