Make Me an Author (in-person class)

    (Grades K-5)

    Thursdays, 2:00 - 3:00 PM – Library Annex

This summer, kids and families have the opportunity to write, illustrate, and publish a real book! Kids will receive writing support from our staff and volunteers as they craft a story of their own. Then, using drawings, photos, or other art, kids will illustrate their work. In order to be published by the library, the story will need to address one of the following themes: anti-bullying, overcoming challenges, or coping with big feelings. Each participant will receive a bound version of their book to keep. Partially funded by the Dutchess County Office of Children and Family Services.

    Registration required. Register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/368577042857

*Please commit to attending at least 4 of the 6 weeks of this 6 week program in order to claim a spot in the class.*

Can't commit to attending in-person regularly? This program is also available as a take-home kit, where families work on their draft together at home before returning their story to the library for publication. When registering, please indicate how you would prefer to participate. Participation is limited to either in-person or take home.

  • Jul/Fri/2022 All day

This program is a take home kit; a pre-prepped learning activity for children ages 2-5 to do at home with a caregiver. To participate, a caregiver must pick the kit up from the library once it is available. Kits are made to order and differentiated by child's age.

Kit available week of 7/15. Our staff will email registrants once they are available.

There is so much to explore under the sea. Just add water to this kit, which helps kids build motor skills and vocabulary at home.

More about our Summer Reading Program and how to earn raffle tickets:

The 2022 Summer Reading Challenge has something for everyone! Whether your family is motivated by helping our community, earning brag badges that show off kids’ reading accomplishments, or a love of ice cream and other rewards, like free books and toys, we’ve got a challenge for you.

Participants simply record the time they spend reading (or being read to) on a paper reading log or on our website. For each 150 minutes read, participants earn raffle tickets for bigger prizes, like HV Renegades Baseball tickets or a Kindle Fire. Kids can also earn brag badges they can wear or attach to their backpack. There’s other incentives kids can earn along the way too, like free books and stickers. When participants read 1,200 minutes or more over the summer, they’ll earn a certificate of achievement.

On top of individual prizes, the reading logged in our summer reading challenge helps our community grow! If Pawling can log 20,000 minutes read this summer, we will earn our community prizes: an ice cream celebration party and a Nintendo Switch that all ages can use in library programming.  Logging reading time takes just minutes, so jump in; there’s a sea full of excitement ahead!

    Why summer reading for youth?

Studies show that over the summer break, students often experience academic backtracking, or lose the skills they already learned in school. And unfortunately this backtracking doesn’t just disappear when returning to the classroom. If not addressed, kids will experience compounding skill loss each year, which can leave them multiple grade levels behind their peers.

Setting aside just 30 minutes to read each week over the summer can help better prepare students to re-enter the classroom in the fall.

Register for our program with a paper log at the front desk, print your own, or log online with READsquared. For more information, contact children@pawlinglibrary.org.
