Discover the magnificence of the Great Swamp, one of largest freshwater wetlands in New York State.

About our presenter: Dr. Utter is Chairman of Friends of the Great Swamp (FrOGS) and Professor Emeritus of Environmental Studies and Biology at SUNY Purchase. He is committed to educating the public about the importance of wetland habitat, conducts research on some of the unique flora and fauna in this area, and carries out conservation projects in the Great Swamp Watershed. His efforts in obtaining grant money and collaborating with numerous other environmental organizations, has helped procure permanent protection for over 1,000 acres of ecologically important properties in the Great Swamp Watershed. Dr. Utter studies rare turtles and leads conservation efforts to protect and increase their critical nesting habitats. Among his other interests are studying a rare woodland lily and a very rare, threatened, butterfly unique to our ecosystem. Among his team’s many accomplishments are increasing nectar resources for the butterfly, expanding its occupied habitat, and doubling its local population. Dr. Utter recently obtained a five-year USDA-NRCS grant to improve and conserve habitat for the threatened New England Cottontail.

Dr. Utter, a long-time birder, graduated from SUNY Oneonta and earned his PhD from Rutgers University. He and his fellow FrOGS Board members, lead canoe paddles, bird walks and other activities so check out the FrOGS website for events where you can participate.

    Become a Citizen Scientist!

Joyce Tomaselli from CCEDC will teach about the Spotted Lanternfly and what you can do to help stop its spread.

Spotted lanternfly (SLF) is an invasive pest that could impact New York's forests as well as the agricultural and tourism industries.

    What to do:

    Learn how to identify SLF.
If you visit other states with SLF, be sure to check all equipment and gear before leaving.
Destroy egg masses by scraping them into a bucket of hot, soapy water or a baggie/jar of hand sanitizer.

    See it? Report it:

Take pictures of the insect, egg masses and/or infestation signs and note the location.
