Liz Conti: Liz Conti, LMSW is the Outreach Director and Social Worker at Northeast Dutchess Immigrant Services. She offers services such as emergency financial relief, food assistance, Beginner and Advanced English classes, and assistance with immigration & status changes.

Northeast Dutchess Immigrant Services (NEDIS) empowers immigrant communities in Dutchess County. We provide basic needs like food and school supplies, assist in navigating the legal system by providing access to attorneys and social welfare programs, and encourage leadership through education and support of arts and culture. Gabrielle Semel: As Founder of Pawling Yoga & Wellness, Gabrielle is committed to sharing the wisdom of the healing sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda. Her primary intention in her work is to connect with each individual, to hold the space for healing, and offer guidance that honors and embraces where one is on his/her own path. The innate healing wisdom of the elements resides within; Gabrielle’s gift is offering means to access this wisdom.

Inspired by her students, and with a commitment to learning and devotion to service, Gabrielle continues to dive deeper in search of a broader understanding of the healing process. Gabrielle's training began with Amy Pearce-Hayden for 200-Hour Teacher Training certification at The RajaHatha School of Yoga in 2006, and four years later traveled the path of the 500-Hour Teacher Training with certification in 2011. She has studied the power of breath with Leslie Kaminoff at The Breathing Project in New York City, and currently has the privilege of studying Ayurvedic Medicine with Dr. Somesh Kaushik at his Ayurvedic and Naturopathic Clinic in Cross River, NY.

Both western and Ayurvedic medicine agree that there are things you can do to keep your heart healthy – and stabilize blood pressure. Ayurveda, however, views the role of the heart somewhat differently than its western counterpart. In Ayurveda, the heart is the energetic center of the body, effecting – and effected by – the cells and tissues of every other organ. They are inseparable. The Ayurvedic philosophy of body, mind, spirit, is no more critical to any organ than to the heart, as it influences the whole.

About our presenter:  Dr. Somesh N. Kaushik is the owner and chief medical practitioner of Dr. Kaushick’s Ayurvedic and Naturopathic Clinic in Cross River, NY.

With over 35 years’ experience as an Ayurvedic physician, Dr. Kaushik’s medical training is extensive. He is one of the most experienced Ayurvedic physicians in North America and is the recipient of the Dhanwantri Award, his profession’s highest honor. Dr. Kaushik recently founded the Institute for the Advancement of Ayurvedic Sciences, a research and teaching institution.

After completing the 6 ½ years of schooling for his Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) from Kurukshetra University, India, in 1983, Dr. Kaushik worked as an Ayurvedic Medical Officer for two years.

Upon moving to the United States in 1985, Dr. Kaushik received his Masters of Public Health (MPH) and Masters of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Alabama in 1988. He then worked as an Epidemiologist and Director of HIV/AIDS Sero-surveillance Program with the Alabama Department of Public Health in Birmingham while maintaining an Ayurvedic practice.

In 1999 he moved to Connecticut and received his Doctor of Naturopathy (ND) from the University of Bridgeport, CT in 2003. He taught Ayurvedic Medicine and Public Health at the College of Naturopathic Medicine, University of Bridgeport, as well as serving as the Director of Admissions there. He has been a faculty member with the University of Bridgeport, Division of Health Sciences since 2001. Dr. Kaushik co-founded the Institute for Ayurvedic and Naturopathic Therapies in Fairfield, CT in 2006.

Dr. Kaushik lectures on Ayurvedic Medicine at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, Portland, OR, as well as at various national and international symposiums and events. He also offers courses, workshops, lectures, and training in Ayurvedic medicine locally. Dr. Kaushik is an approved continuing education provider for Yoga teachers through the YACEP (Yoga Alliance for Continuing Education Providers) and has achieved the highest Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher certificate having completed 500 hours of training (E-RYT 500). He includes therapeutic Yoga in his practice.

Each year, Dr. Kaushik and his family travel to India to set up camps offering free medical care for underserved populations. He’d like to expand this service to other countries as well.

Dr. Kaushik brings his unique background as an Ayurvedic and Naturopathic practitioner with experience in public health and health education to this locality. He welcomes you into his wellness community.

The book club will be discussing My Life My Love My Legacy by Coretta Scott King.

Are you interested in reading and discussing non-fiction books, mainly autobiographical, by women? Then this is your Book Club! This is an opportunity to read about real life accounts of extraordinary women and most of it first hand through memoirs and autobiographies.

We’ll begin each discussion by offering up some tidbits and questions to get us started and then it’s an open forum. Our hope is that together we will get to know, not only important women in history, but women who are brave, creative, passionate, and original thinkers.

It does not matter how expert you are with the works or the authors. If you love the idea of reading and discussing non-fiction books by women who have powerful and inspiring stories to share this might be the perfect place to begin. Maybe you’ll be inspired to tell your own story.

To quote Malala Yousafzai: “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world”.
