Dog Tales (Developing Reader Program)

August 9, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

For developing readers, especially grades 1-6. Incoming Kindergarteners who can read independently and those in grades above sixth looking for a low-stress reading practice environment are also welcome.
Select Wednesdays, (7/12, 7/19, 8/9 and 8/16)  5:00 – 6:30 PM by 15 minute appointment – Library Courtyard or Library Annex Register here.

Meet our pal Jackie and her dog, Harper the reading dog! This program provides a fun, relaxed space for kids to practice reading skills and get some puppy love at the same time. Harper and Jackie are Hudson Valley Paws for a Cause trained providers, ready to assist with low-stress reading practice support. This program is a great fit for kids who love to read and those who don’t, as well as kids who just want a puppy cuddle. Great for anxious or developing readers to practice their skills!

IMPORTANT: Appointments are short, so please book multiple appointments if you wish to register multiple readers. Since this is one-on-one, please ONLY reserve a space if you KNOW you will be attending that day. You are welcome to register day of or in advance. Due to the one-on-one structure of this program, failure to attend 2 registered sessions of this program without notifying our staff in advance will result in the cancellation of any remaining registrations for this program. If all slots are taken for a certain day and you wish to join, please join our waitlist or contact Children’s Program Coordinator Neena McBaer at 845-855-3444 or children@pawlinglibrary.org. Harper and Jackie do their best to never turn away an interested youth!

This program is a partnership between the Pawling Library and Hudson Valley Paws for a Cause and the READ program.

Research shows that working with a therapy dog on reading can be a huge help for anyone that experiences reading related anxiety, perfectionist behavior, or otherwise struggles with reading. Harper is an expert listener who won’t judge when readers make mistakes (as all developing readers do) and loves to hear stories, no matter the reader!

Registration preferred, as only a few slots are available each week. Walk-ins will be accommodated whenever possible.  Register for one, or multiple of the available dates. Each appointment must be made individually. Click here to register.
