The skeletal system is made up of the bones (the skeleton), muscles, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, joints, and other connective tissue that supports and binds tissues and organs together. Its primary functions include supporting the body, allowing motion, and protecting vital organs. It also is involved in the production of blood cells, storage of minerals, and endocrine regulation.
While the adult human skeletal system includes 206 bones, the infantile skeletal system has many more, since not all of the bones have fused together yet. The mineral calcium helps your muscles, nerves, and cells work normally. If you do not get enough calcium in your diet, or if your body does not absorb enough calcium, your bones can get weak or will not grow properly. Your skeleton (bones) are a living organ. Teeth are not bones but are still part of the human skeletal system.
Skeletal diseases include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis. Primary symptoms of skeletal disease, which may overlap with muscle and tissue conditions, include pain, stiffness, swelling, limited range of motion, weakness, fatigue, and decreased physical function.
Ayurveda assists our foundation – the skeletal system – by addressing its components as a whole while analyzing and treating individual symptoms and issues.

The book club will be discussing The Sisters Rosensweig, by Wendy Wasserstein.
Are you interested in reading and discussing novels, plays, and poems by women? Then this is your Book Club! This is a fun opportunity to indulge in some great works by women writers.
We will begin each discussion with a little background history and tidbits on each female writer. I’ll ask a few questions to get us started and then it’s an open forum. My hope is that together we gain a little more insight into these books (and perhaps the authors as well).
Some of these books you may know well. Some may be books you always meant to read and never got around to! It does not matter how expert you are with the works or the authors. If you are passionate about discussing books and would like to build up your repertoire of works by women, this might be the perfect place to start. To quote Mary Shelley: “The beginning is always today.”
Reading List:
June: Wendy Wasserstein “The Sisters Rosensweig” Play 1992 July: Harper Lee “To Kill a Mockingbird” 1960 and “Go Set a Watchman!” 2015 August: Doris Kearns Goodwin “Wait Till Next Year” 1997

The 2022 Summer Reading Challenge has something for everyone! Whether your family is motivated by helping our community, earning brag badges that show off kids’ reading accomplishments, or a love of ice cream and other rewards, like free books and toys, we’ve got a challenge for you.
Participants simply record the time they spend reading (or being read to) on a paper reading log or on our website. For each 150 minutes read, kids will earn brag badges they can wear or attach to their backpack. There’s other incentives kids can earn along the way too, like free books, stickers, and raffle tickets for bigger prizes, like HV Renegades Baseball tickets or a Kindle Fire. When participants read 1,200 minutes or more over the summer, they’ll earn a certificate of achievement.
On top of individual prizes, the reading logged in our summer reading challenge helps our community grow! If Pawling can log 20,000 minutes read this summer, we will earn our community prizes: an ice cream celebration party and a Nintendo Switch that all ages can use in library programming. Logging reading time takes just minutes, so jump in; there’s a sea full of excitement ahead!
Why summer reading?
Studies show that over the summer break, students often experience academic backtracking, or lose the skills they already learned in school. And unfortunately this backtracking doesn’t just disappear when returning to the classroom. If not addressed, kids will experience compounding skill loss each year, which can leave them multiple grade levels behind their peers.
Setting aside just 30 minutes to read each week over the summer can help better prepare students to re-enter the classroom in the fall.
Ages: Families with youth grades Kindergarten – 8th grade. Children ten and under must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.
Monday, 6/20, 3:30 – 4:15 PM ; join us on your day off school!
In partnership with Pawling Recreation.
Join as Magician Jim Vagias wows families with his tricks, humor, and puppeteering. This interactive program is paid for in part by Dutchess County as part of our Literacy Heroes program series.
