The current medical understanding is that diabetes is a group of related diseases in which the body is unable to regulate the amount of sugar, specifically glucose, in the blood. The Ayurvedic approach is to discover the “root cause” of this multi-faceted condition specific to an individual’s unique constitution, assist the body in regulating its blood sugar levels, and ensure that the entire body remains in balance so that no complications arise. Great Stories Club: Finding Your Voice/: Encontrando Tu Voz
This meeting of the Great Stories Club will continue the discussion of I am Alfonso Jones by Tony Medina. Although the graphic novel is fiction, the story reflects a reality for far too many young people. How might we retell the stories of victims of violence to emphasize their full humanity? Would you draw a picture, write a poem or story, make a song or something else? What will you include in your creation? We will have art supplies and writing materials available for participants during this meeting. The Pawling Library is honored to have been selected as one of 58 libraries nationwide to take part in the Great Stories Club, a reading and discussion program for underserved teens. These competitive grants are offered by the American Library Association (ALA) with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). This writing group, led by author and teacher Walter Woodhouse and author Steve Haggerty, is open to anyone ages 18 and up who has an interest in writing. We welcome books of fiction, short stories, nonfiction, and poetry. The program will run as the classic writing workshop, where participants have the opportunity to read their work and offer helpful comments to one another. Please join us for this weekly program. About our presenters: Walter Woodhouse: Before retiring in 2012, Mr. Woodhouse was Assistant Superintendent for Instruction for Nyack Public Schools, where he began as the English Department Chair. He also served as Assistant Headmaster at the Rockland Country Day School, where he began as a teacher. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Oregon in Eugene, as well as an M.A. in Education from Pace University. He and his wife, Martha, raised four children in Nyack, New York before moving to Pawling, and now...

Thank you. In Ayurveda, balancing the three body types – pitta, vata, kapha – results in an outlook on life in which one feels in harmony with the universe. Imbalance allows disharmony to take hold and feelings of depression, anxiety, fear, and despair can result. These feelings and emotions resulting from the imbalance can, in turn, affect the chemistry of the body and create a vicious cycle of physical, mental, and emotional pain. Postponed Great Stories Club: Finding Your Voice/Encontrando Tu Voz
For this workshop based on Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson, we will supply the teens with canvas, paint, and materials to use to create collage art. Additionally, at the end of this series, participants will be invited to submit any of their poems, collages, or journal entries to compile into a published book highlighting their collected work. The Pawling Library is honored to have been selected as one of 58 libraries nationwide to take part in the Great Stories Club, a reading and discussion program for underserved teens. These competitive grants are offered by the American Library Association (ALA) with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The Library has received two Great Stories Grants and will be partnering with Camino al Exito to bring teens age 13 & up a book discussion series in English & Spanish. After reading inspiring works by 24 different women writers the past 2 years, we’re now going to do a deep dive on 1 — AGATHA CHRISTIE. We will read select works from 1920 up until 1952. If you love the idea of reading and discussing detective novels by Dame Agatha Christie, then this is your Book Club! We’ll begin each discussion by offering up some tidbits about the author, and details about each specific book. The hope is that together we will get to know a sizable collection of Agatha Christie’s works and gain some insight into her as a writer and person. Please join us! Please join us. Relax and connect with like-minded people, and add a burst of color to your day! All supplies will be provided.

This is a year-round volunteer opportunity for ages 11 & up. The group will meet twice a month to plan or work on service projects to benefit the Library and the Pawling community. Meeting dates: The first and third Wednesday of each month at 5 pm to 6:30 pm. There may be additional dates depending on the project.
