The College Essay: A strategy and activity guide for parents & guardians / Cancelled

    7:00 PM-8:00 PM
    Sep/Mon/2022

    Presented by Kasey Stecher

    Monday, September 19
    7-8 pm

Registration is required. You can register below or by contacting Donald, our Adult Program Coordinator, at adult@pawlinglibrary.org.

Please note: This program has been rescheduled to Monday, November 14, from 7-8 pm.

The dreaded blinking cursor. The pressure of a looming deadline and 650-word counts left empty….the college essay! This piece of writing is often the first big struggle High School Seniors face. The students themselves may receive a lot of resources and guidance on how and what to write, but this workshop speaks to the parents, guardians and support systems for juniors in High School. This event will seek to give families strategies to help their high schoolers with brainstorming and generating ideas for the college essay. This event will also give adults an opportunity to practice some of these strategies so that they can better understand the process their own children will go through when writing the all-important college essay.

Inspiring Non-Fiction Works by Women (Book Club) Online Program

    6:30 PM-7:30 PM
    Sep/Wed/2022

    Wednesday, September 21
    6:30-7:30 pm

Registration is required. You can register below or by contacting Donald, our Adult Program Coordinator, at adult@pawlinglibrary.org.

The book club will be discussing Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy.

Are you interested in reading and discussing non-fiction books, mainly autobiographical, by women? Then this is your Book Club! This is an opportunity to read about real life accounts of extraordinary women and most of it first hand through memoirs and autobiographies.

We’ll begin each discussion by offering up some tidbits and questions to get us started and then it’s an open forum. Our hope is that together we will get to know, not only important women in history, but women who are brave, creative, passionate, and original thinkers.

It does not matter how expert you are with the works or the authors. If you love the idea of reading and discussing non-fiction books by women who have powerful and inspiring stories to share this might be the perfect place to begin. Maybe you’ll be inspired to tell your own story.

To quote Malala Yousafzai: “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world”.

    Reading List:

September: Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy (1994)

October: The Nine: The True Story of a Band of Women Who Survived the Worst of Nazi Germany  by Gwen Strauss (2021)

December: My Remarkable Journey by Katherine Johnson (2021)

January: I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai (2013)
