COME TOGETHER PAWLING: Viewing of TED TALK video on Choice, Happiness and Spaghetti Sauce & Discussion / Online Program

    7:00 PM-8:00 PM

    Monday, January 10
    7-8 pm

Registration is required. You can register below or by contacting Donald, our Adult Program Coordinator, at

Each month, in a respectful and open environment, we’ll explore a new topic led by a different community leader.

At the start of the program, we’ll be watching a 17-minute TED TALKS video, entitled Choice, Happiness and Spaghetti Sauce, with author Malcolm Gladwell.

Following the viewing, we’ll open up a group discussion.

Our wellness as individuals and as a community depends on continued sharing, support and conversation in times of celebration as well as in times of conflict.

Come Together and join us in fostering deeper conversations, listening to disparate experiences and points of view in the realm of challenging context such as racism, sexism, bipartisanship, whiteness and social justice.

We understand that these conversations could be difficult to have, and believe that by coming together to find the willingness to listen and learn, we can aspire to create a stronger Pawling, where ALL community members feel safe, welcome and represented.

This program is being provided through a partnership with the Pawling Library and Pawling Yoga & Wellness.

NOTE: TED TALK is the owner of Choice, Happiness and Spaghetti Sauce

    Speaker: Malcolm Gladwell

This video was published in February 2004 by TED TALKS

Body System Disorders: The Immune System-Its Importance to Whole Body Health / Online Program

    7:00 PM-8:00 PM

Presented by Dr. Somesh N. Kaushik

NOTE: Dr. Kaushik’s informative health lecture was recorded on January 11. If you were unable to attend this program, or would just like to review the information, click on the link below to watch the presentation.

Our immune system is made up of both individual cells and proteins as well as entire organs and organ systems. The organs of the immune system include the skin and mucous membranes, and the lymphatic system. Your skin and mucous membranes act as a physical barrier and are the first line of defense against pathogens entering from outside the body.

The primary lymphatic system is composed of bone marrow and the thymus; Secondary are the lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, and certain tissues in various mucous membrane layers in the body such as in the bowel. It is in these organs where the cells of the immune system do their actual job of fighting off germs and foreign substances

When the immune system does not function properly, complications arise. Some issues are less pervasive, such as pollen allergy, while others are extensive, such as genetic disorders that wipe out the presence or function of an entire set of immune cells. Immune deficiencies may be temporary or permanent. Temporary (acute) immune deficiency can be caused by a variety of sources that weaken the immune system. Common infections, including influenza and mononucleosis, can suppress the immune system. Autoimmune disorders (lupus and RA) and sepsis are two serious (chronic) immune dysfunctions. Ayurveda identifies the importance of the connectivity of the immune system to the other body systems and emphasizes how this is critical to the health of the whole body.
