·
REMINDER: Our first raffle in our Summer Reading Challenge will be 7/15! If you’ve been logging your reading online or with a paper log, you’ve been earning raffle tickets to win prizes in our raffles! But have you stopped by the library to fill them out and pick up your other prizes?
Want a chance to win? Kids and teens who have leveled up in the Summer Reading Challenge will need to stop by the library before 7/15 to pick up prizes and enter their raffle tickets or contact program coordinator Neena to redeem their tickets. Adult participants do not need to stop by; their tickets are automatically entered for them!
For the 7/15 raffle, you could win tickets to games from awesome area teams like the Hudson Valley Renegades, New York Red Bulls, and Danbury Westerners.
Got questions? Out of town or unable to stop in to redeem tickets? Contact Program Coordinator Neena McBaer at 845-855-3444 or children@pawlinglibrary.org to find out about entering the raffle when you can’t come in.

The digestive system is made up of the gastrointestinal tract—also called the GI tract or digestive tract—and the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. The GI tract is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus. The hollow organs that make up the GI tract are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus. The liver, pancreas, and gallbladder are the solid organs of the digestive system.
The digestive system is often called “the second brain” because it breaks nutrients down so that your body can absorb them and use them for energy, growth, and cell repair. Each part of the digestive system helps to move food and liquid through your GI tract. Your large intestine absorbs water, and the waste products of digestion become stool. Nerves and hormones help control the digestive process.
Digestive disorders encompass a variety of diseases ranging from mild to severe. Common digestive disorders include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Chron’s, diverticulitis, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance and hiatal hernia. The most common symptoms of digestive disorders include bleeding, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, pain, nausea and vomiting. Ayurveda recognizes that a dysfunction in the digestive system involves both digestion and assimilation of nutrients and, in this way, is the root cause of ill health.

The book club will be discussing “Wait Till Next Year” by Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Are you interested in reading and discussing novels, plays, and poems by women? Then this is your Book Club! This is a fun opportunity to indulge in some great works by women writers.
We will begin each discussion with a little background history and tidbits on each female writer. I’ll ask a few questions to get us started and then it’s an open forum. My hope is that together we gain a little more insight into these books (and perhaps the authors as well).
Some of these books you may know well. Some may be books you always meant to read and never got around to! It does not matter how expert you are with the works or the authors. If you are passionate about discussing books and would like to build up your repertoire of works by women, this might be the perfect place to start. To quote Mary Shelley: “The beginning is always today.”

This summer, kids and families have the opportunity to write, illustrate, and publish a real book! Kids will receive writing support from our staff and volunteers as they craft a story of their own. Then, using drawings, photos, or other art, kids will illustrate their work. In order to be published by the library, the story will need to address one of the following themes: anti-bullying, overcoming challenges, or coping with big feelings. Each participant will receive a bound version of their book to keep. Partially funded by the Dutchess County Office of Children and Family Services.
*Please commit to attending at least 4 of the 6 weeks of this 6 week program in order to claim a spot in the class.*
Can’t commit to attending in-person regularly? This program is also available as a take-home kit, where families work on their draft together at home before returning their story to the library for publication. When registering, please indicate how you would prefer to participate. Participation is limited to either in-person or take home.
