Spring Garden

Spring is on its way and so are our Spring Children’s Programs! Due to space limitations, registration is required for all of our programs. You can print a Spring 2015 Lottery Form or pick one up at the circulation desk at the library to complete and return to the library. Lottery registration forms must be returned by Sunday, March 15th at 4:00 pm. Families must call to confirm program registration. Registration information will be available beginning Wednesday, March 18th at 10 am.  For more information about any of these programs, please contact our Children’s Services Coordinator, Ms. Karen.

Early Literacy Programs
For children birth to 30 months old.

babiesWiggle, Giggle, & Bounce…for children birth – 18 months.
Infants and caregivers will participate in lively 30 minute sessions that include music, movement, body rhymes, nursery rhymes, listening to books and lots of hugs! You can continue to have fun with your little one at home by checking out our Wiggle, Giggle & Bounce Rhyme page.

Read, Rhyme & Romp…for toddlers ages 18 – 30 months.RRR@
Toddlers and caregivers will participate in fun filled 45 minute sessions that include listening to books, music, movement, finger plays, nursery rhymes and other related activities designed especially for toddlers. Each session is followed by an open exploration time for children so parents can socialize.

The Two of Us…caregiver & child program for 2½ – 3½ years.
A weekly parent and child program that introduces children to group story programs with 45 minute sessions that include listening to books, music, movement, finger plays, nursery rhymes, flannel board activities and more.

2ofusRead, Sing & Learn…a Saturday parent & child program for ages 2 1/2 – 4 years
Just like in our Two of Us weekday program, children and their parents will enjoy active 45 minute sessions that include listening to books, music and interactive activities presented at the perfect time for working families.  There will be no session on April 4th.

Playspace
…play group fun for toddlers & caregivers.playspace2
Helping young children learn to share and play together is a challenge! Bring a toy and your little one for an hour of group playtime for the children and parent time for you! Parents must stay with children in the community room. Playgroup is open to children ages 18 months & up. Younger children are welcome, but must be directly supervised by a parent.

Free Development Check Ups for Childrenbaby blocks
The Pawling Library continues to partner with Astor Head Start & United Way to provide free development check ups for children ages 2 months – 5 years. Interested caregivers can call 2-1-1 or 1-800-899-1479 for an appointment. All appointments will take place in the library Annex building.

 

 
Preschool Literacy Programs
For children ages 3 to 5 years old.

 

PreSchool Literacy ProgramsJust for Me…a literacy program for 3 – 4 years.
Our first independent program includes listening to books, games, music, rhythm, movement,and flannel board activities. Sessions are designed to encourage language, thinking skills, imagination and early literacy skills in a fun, natural setting. Parents are welcome to stay with their child if needed.

Reading & Rhythm
…a literacy program for 4 – 5 years.
Children will participate in sessions that include listening to books, music, movement story re-telling, games and thinking activities designed to make early literacy skills fun and engaging.

Leapin’ Letters
…an early literacy learning program for children ages 4 & 5 yearsLeapin' Letters
Immerse your child in early literacy skills in our special literacy program that focuses on those important pre-reading skills. We’ll play with sounds, rhyming and syllables in a fun and natural atmosphere. Children will need an easy to open binder for this program.

Primary School Age Programs

legosBooks & Blocks…listen & build for grades K – 2!
Come listen to a story and imagine what the building possibilities are! Then put your imagination in high gear and get ready to create lots of different structures. Weekly challenges will guide students to think about their structures and build within a specified criteria.

Pencil wizardPencil Wizards…a fun beginning writing & drawing program for grades K – 2
We’ll start with a story and then we’ll sharpen our pencils and learn to draw using easy lines and shapes. When we’re done we’ll write a simple sentence under it using familiar sight words and easily decodable words. We’ll finish by coloring and adding scenery to make our work “picture perfect!

sleuth2Super Sleuth Stories…a crime stopper book club for grades K – 2.
Do you have what it takes to solve mysteries? Join us to read early reader mysteries and learn some tricks of the trade. We’ll read a new book each session and start with a super sleuth discussion. Then we’ll head over to the crime lab to learn some real detective skills. During the spring session we’ll be reading The Mystery of the Missing Dog and Bones & the Big Yellow Mystery.

Little Stitchers…a beginning sewing class for grades K – 2.Stitchers
We’ve got a great new way to develop eye-hand coordination and get creative! We’ll be using paper, card stock and felt to get our “little stitchers” on the road to sewing! We’ll learn how to thread a needle and begin to sew using basic stitches to create some fun projects. We’ll even be reading some basic sight words! This session we’ll start with something fun for ourselves and make special gifts for others, too!

Kinderlit Stories…a weekend literacy program for 5 – 6 year olds.
Book buddiesA Saturday morning literacy program for Kindergartners! Students will participate in sessions that include listening to books, music, movement story re-telling, phonological awareness games and thinking activities designed to make learning literacy skills fun and engaging. No session on April 4th.

 

Home School Connection…a group program for families who home school their childrenHSC
Projects and activities inspired by the families and children who participate in the program. This program provides a time for creativity, imagination and socialization for the students while offering home schooling parents an opportunity to meet with each other.
April 10 & 24 and May 8 & 22, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

 

Magic Tree House Book Club…for students in grade 2 & up. (see more below)

 

Reading ConnectBook Buddies…reading practice for children in grades K – 2.
Teen volunteers will work 1:1 with new, reluctant or struggling readers to help encourage and support their growing reading skills.
Students will:
★ Listen to your child read.
★ Encourage & support reading strategies.
★ Read to your child to support comprehension.
★ Ask your child important question to increase understanding of the story as he or she reads.

Sign your child up and we’ll arrange 30 minutes of quality reading time with a “big brother or big sister” in a supervised setting. Don’t miss out on an opportunity for your child to receive individualized attention and reading practice all at the same time. Registration is required and is limited by the number of available volunteers.

Pokemon Pokémon Day @ the Pawling Library…trading card fun for grades K – 2.
We’ve got great news! The number 29 is the lucky day for Pawling’s Pokémon fans! The Pawling Library will host 2 special Pokémon days where we invite you to bring your cards, challenge your friends and enjoy lots of other Pokémon activities. Card trading will only be permitted at the end when parents return for pick up. Registration is required, but requests will be taken for each day separately.

Clisby’s Crafting Cornera fun crafting workshop for students in grades 1 & 2.
Do you need a place to craft besides your table at home where you don’t always know what to make? Well you can now say, “problem solved”. At Clisby’s Crafting Corner we’ll have fun making crafts on select Saturdays from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. Join us in the community room in the yellow house next to the library. Hope to see you there! This crafting club is being designed and presented by Allison Clisby as her Girl Scout Silver Award project. Sign up for one or all of these great featured projects. Registration is required.

Join us as we continue to read Jack and Annie adventures together! Read the book at home and then come for interactive story discussion and fun activities. This session we’ll read Dingoes at Dinnertime & A Crazy Day with Cobras.

Operation: TEAMWORK…for students in grade 3 & 4.
Operation Teamwork
Accepting others as they are and being tolerant of differences can be difficult lessons to learn.  We’ll dive into these important life lessons as we read about some very challenging lives and see first hand how it feels to be “on the outside looking in.” We’ll be reading Wonder by RJ Palacio and Firegirl by Tony Abbott.  After our book discussion we’ll head outside to practice our skills while we learn some fun cooperative learning games.

 

In Stitches…a sewing program for grades 3 & 4In Stitches
If sewing sounds like fun, join us to learn a little more each session about how to sew. This program will include projects that involve both hand sewing and machine sewing! We’ll be learning some new stitches and perfecting those needle threading skills.

Butterfly Feeding Dish: Family Craft Workshop…for students age 7 years & up and an adult.
butterfliesThe beautiful monarch butterflies are not doing so well. Sadly, they’re being considered fo
r endangered species status. Loss of habit, pesticides and global warming are to blame.  Their love of a flower’s nectar is well known. But, they also enjoy other tasty treats. Join us and make your own Monarch Butterfly Feeding Dish.  We promise we’ll share with you some of their favorite recipes. Materials fee: $5.00

 Pawling Library’s Amazing Race…a fun-filled event for families
Looking for a fun family bonding experience? Join the Amazing Race in the Village of Pawling.  Put on for Amazing Raceyou by the teens of the Pawling Free Library.  Compete against other Pawling families in a race around the village, completing physical and mental challenges that are fun for the whole family.  There will be a finish celebration after the race along with prizes!  Starting point in the Pawling Library at 1:00pm.  Race will only last 1 hour (or less).  This event is for families with children up to grade 4.

Science Buddies…parent & child literacy that includes hands-on science!
Science BuddiesYoung children 3 – 5 years bring a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world to everything they do. Whether they are watching frogs in a pond, blowing bubbles or exploring things  that float or sink, children are engaged in finding out how the world works.  This new program will tap into your child’s sense of wonder and bring you along for the ride!  We’ll start with a story that will springboard us into the world of science exploration.  We’ll offer this program during the day and repeat the program in the evening for working families.
