There are many ways to be a hero and the Pawling Library is ready and waiting to help you start your hero story this summer! Programs are scheduled to open beginning Monday, July 6th so get ready for fun!  There is still limited availability of programs, especially in our morning literacy programs. For more information, please contact our Children’s Services Coordinator, Ms. Karen or call the library at 855-3444.  Registration is required for all programs.

Early Literacy Programs

Infants and caregivers will participate in lively 30 minute sessions that include music, movement, body rhymes, nursery rhymes, listening to books and lots of hugs! You can continue to have fun with your little one at home by checking out our Wiggle, Giggle & Bounce Rhyme page.

Tireless Toddlersfor toddlers ages 18 – 30 months.Flying books
Toddlers and caregivers will participate in fun filled 45 minute sessions that include listening to books, rhythm instruments, movement, finger plays, nursery rhymes and other related activities designed especially for active toddlers.

Dynamic Duosa caregiver & child program for 2½ – 3½ years.

Free Development Check Ups for Childrenbaby blocks
The Pawling Library continues to partner with Astor Head Start & United Way to provide free development check ups for children ages 2 months – 5 years. Interested caregivers can call 2-1-1 or 1-800-899-1479 for an appointment. All appointments will take place in the library Annex building.

Core Literacy Programs
For children ages 3 years to entering grade 5.

 

 Motivating children to read and helping them to find & read good books are an important part of helping them grow to be lifelong readers. These programs are designed to bring excitement to books by engaging children in theme related activities presented as a series of stations. Your child will have fun while enjoying terrific books!

Mighty TykesMighty Tykesa lively first summer literacy program for 3 – 5 year olds
Weekly themed sessions that encourage independence will include terrific books, music, imagination, movement, outdoor hands-on stations and a weekly art activity. Sessions are designed to encourage language and thinking skills in a fun, natural setting. Each session will include time for a short snack break, so please send a small snack & drink each week with your child. (Parents may stay if needed.)

Super Sidekicksfun with books for heroes entering grades K -2Sidekicks
Children will participate in themed weekly sessions that build the hero within including great books, thinking skills, outdoor games and related activities. Books & Blocks
listen & build for grades K – 2!
Come listen to a story and imagine what the building possibilities are! Then put your imagination in high gear and get ready to create lots of different structures. Weekly challenges will guide students to think about their structures and build within a specified criteria.

Do you want to be an Imagination Hero?
Destination ImaginationDestination: Imaginationa book club for students entering grade K – 1
Many heroes have used their imagination to solve problems by thinking about things in a way no one else has before. You’ll read some books at home that will really inspire your imagination and then we’ll talk about how problems in the story were solved by creative thinking.  We’ll read My Lucky Day by Keiko Kasza and  Don’t Play with your Food by Bob Shea.  After we talk about the book, we’ll work together to invent some solutions to some very interesting challenges.  Bring your creativity & imagination and be ready to invent some cool solutions to some tricky problems!

PFL Heroes  Trainingheroic activities for students entering grades K – 2.Training
PFL Heroes Training School…heroic activities for students entering grades K – 2.
We are looking for a few great heroes to help us perform some very heroic deeds.
•    Helping Heroes – there are many people in our community who need things they cannot afford to buy. The Community Resource Center is an important place for them because it helps them feed and take good care of their families.  We’ll be helping the Resource Center by collecting things they need.  We’ll be decorating a box to collect needed supplies and then we’ll bring the donations to the Resource Center at the end of the summer.  Come and enjoy some snacks while you decorate and you’ll learn to be a real community hero to those in need!

•    Sunshine Heroes – you can be a hero to someone who is lonely and can’t leave their home.  We’ll be making some surprises for home bound residents and bringing them to the Community Resource Center to add to their sunshine baskets.  You’ll be a real hero to someone by brightening their day!

•    Earth Heroes – taking good care of the Earth is important for everyone’s future.  We make a fun recycling project to you to take home.  The Earth will really appreciate it!

Pokémon Hero Training Campstudents entering grades 1 – 4 can learn to play Pokémon!Pokemon
Join us to learn the basics of playing Pokémon. Each session we’ll have time to play opponents, compare card collections and look at library resources. Then we’ll learn some basics in Pokémon Training Camp, engage an opponent in a Poké-duel and we’ll finish with a fun Pokémon Challenge! Come and learn more about your favorite heroes while you learn the rules of play for the Pokémon Card game.

Would you like to make the perfect bracelet?  Creative Design heroes know it takes patience, time AND planning!  Join us to make your dream come true by planning and creating a beautiful beaded bracelet.  We’ll think about color, patterns & size and plan our bead choices to create the best beaded bracelets ever!

Do you want to be a Reading Hero?
Book Buddies
reading practice for children entering grades 1 – 5.

Super GangTeen volunteers will work 1:1 with new, reluctant or struggling readers to help encourage and support their growing reading skills.
Students will:
★ Listen to your child read.
★ Encourage & support reading strategies.
★ Read to your child to support comprehension.
★ Ask your child important question to increase understanding of the story as he or she reads.

Sign your child up and we’ll arrange 30 minutes of quality reading time with a “big brother or big sister” in a supervised setting. Don’t miss out on an opportunity for your child to receive individualized attention and reading practice all at the same time. Registration is required and is limited by the number of available volunteers.

Meet a real hero…Hogan our Therapy Dog!

Team Hogan is Hogan, a chocolate lab and Vicki, his owner and trainer. Schedule a time to read 15 minutes with Hogan, a certified, trained therapy dog.  Research has shown the benefits of having children read with dogs.   Enjoy those benefits right here at the library.  Hogan & Vicki are ready and willing to read with your child this summer!

Would you like to make a bracelet that radiates who you are?  Creative Design heroes know it takes time, patience AND planning!  Join us to make your personalized bracelet using tiny seed-beads to create a beautiful flowing bracelet in your own unique design.  We’ll think about color & patterns and you’ll plan your bead choices to create a delicate beaded beauty!

Operation: TEAMWORK
for students in grade 3 & 4.
Operation Teamwork
Heroes work hard to accept others as they are and to be tolerant of differences, but it’s a tough lesson to learn. We’ll dive into these important life lessons as we read about some very challenging lives and see first hand how it feels to be “on the outside looking in.” This summer we’ll be reading Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt and El Deafo by Cece Bell. After our book discussion we’ll head outside to practice our skills while we learn some fun cooperative learning games.

carnival heroes entering grade 4 & up!
Help us get ready for the Superhero Power Hour, our end of summer carnival!  We’ll create Photo-face cut out boards of our own personal Super Hero for photo-ops during the carnival.  Then we’ll create games of heroic proportions to play with our guests that will be fun for the whole family.  Fun Team participants MUST be available the day of the carnival to help with the event.  Our Superhero Power Hour will be held on Friday, August 21st from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. (The raindate is scheduled for Saturday, August 22nd.)

Superhero Power Hour...our end of summer literacy carnival for the whole family!
Power Hour2What an exciting way to end our heroic summer! Families are welcome to join us at our end of summer carnival…Superhero Power Hour!  PFL Fun Team has worked hard all summer making photo-face cut out boards of their favorite heroes and preparing games that are sure to create a super ending to our summer. Join us for a fun afternoon that will culminate in a “super treat” and our raffle drawings. You won’t want to miss the fun!

puppyPets: Family Craft Workshop for children 7 years & up and an adult.
Make a sculpture of your favorite pet.  Registration and parental supervision required.  Program Fee: $5.00.

Wednesday, 7/8: Sculpting & Wednesday, 7/22: Painting , 6:30-8:30 pm

Superhero Logo: Family Craft Workshop for children 7 years & up and an adult. batman
At this sculpting workshop you’ll be creating your own distinctive superhero logo.  Registration and parental supervision required.  Program Fee: $5.00.
