Prescription Drop Box Coming to Pawling!

Dear Neighbor, I wanted to share with you some important news regarding our continued efforts to win the ongoing war on addiction. The sad reality is that drug overdoses kill more people every year than traffic accidents.  Even more frightening, this problem is affecting an increasing number of teenagers, with one in four American teens saying they have misused or abused a prescription drug.  These unwanted drugs are poisoning our children and putting the safety of our families at risk. As your State Senator I am proud to report that I was able to secure the necessary funding to sponsor a prescription drop box that is being placed at the Sheriff’s substation in Pawling.  Working in conjunction with County Executive Molinaro and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, this drop box will provide a safe place for folks to discard unused or unwanted drugs. Today, our Homebound Delivery Coordinator, Evelina, attended a lovely luncheon at The Grand Rehabilitation Center for all who volunteer their time and services there.  As part of our Homebound Delivery services Evelina visits The Grand with books and other materials for our patrons who can not make it into the library. Dutchess County Celebrates Earth Day with Highway Clean Ups

Poughkeepsie… With Earth Day approaching on April 22nd, Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro has announced the Dutchess County Department of Public Works (DPW) Highway Division will be devoting several days to highway cleanup efforts on major roadways as part of ongoing efforts to maintain the county roadway system. Starting today (Wednesday, April 20th ) to Friday, April 23rd, DPW Highway crews will be focused on litter clean up on some of the county’s most highly trafficked roadways. Several local municipalities including Milan, Pleasant Valley and Rhinebeck are also joining in the effort and will have crews cleaning up town roadways. County Executive Molinaro said, “Our DPW Highway crews work diligently to ensure our county roadways are well maintained and safe for residents and visitors alike. It is a shame that far too often the beauty of Dutchess County is marred by litter along our roadways. Dutchess County to Host Special Needs Movie Day

Saturday, April 23rd at Roosevelt Cinemas in Hyde Park Poughkeepsie… As Dutchess County continues to celebrate April as Autism Awareness Month, County Executive Marcus Molinaro invites children with special needs, their families and support agencies to a free movie event on Saturday, April 23rd at 10 a.m. at the Roosevelt Cinemas, 4060 Albany Post Road (Route 9) in Hyde Park. The theater will adjust both lighting and sound to make the experience more enjoyable for children on the autism spectrum or who experience sensory issues. County Executive Molinaro said, “Our movie day is great example of how we in Dutchess County Government THINK DIFFERENTLY about our neighbors of all abilities – giving our children with special needs and their families a morning of stress-free fun in a welcoming environment. While a trip to the movie theater can be a challenge for families of children with special needs, we’re happy to provide them this opportunity to enjoy time with their loved ones in a supportive atmosphere.” Click here.

Spring Migratory Birdwalk

Spring Migratory Birdwalk   With Barbara Butler (Waterman Bird Club) and Judy Kelley-Moberg (FrOGS)   Saturday, May 7th, 8 am   Oblong Land Conservancy is teaming up with Barbara Butler of the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club, and Judy Kelley-Moberg of Friends of the Great Swamp (FrOGS), for a guided walk through prime bird habitat, including an upland cedar grove and the Great Swamp floodplain. This is the height of migratory bird season, and the walk will focus on collecting data on the migratory bird population of the Great Swamp, an Audubon Important Bird Area (IBA). Meet at the Slocum Mostachetti Preserve, which is .7 miles to the west of the light at the intersection of RT 22 and Pleasant Ridge Road/County Rt 21. (The location shares a driveway with 3517 Pleasant Ridge Road, Wingdale, NY) Registration required. Register early as space is limited.     Enoch Crosby Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP   The Enoch Crosby Chapter NSDAR Scholarship is a one-time award of $500 given to a college bound, high school student.   DAR is a women’s service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, patriotism and honoring the patriots of the Revolutionary War.   Student scholarship applicants should exhibit extraordinary citizenship, integrity and service to his or her community while maintaining high academic standards. The applicant must be ·    a student in good standing, ·    currently enrolled in high school in Putnam County or in the school districts of the towns of Pawling and Dover in Dutchess County  OR home schooled in one of the previously mentioned localities, ·    received acceptance to an accredited college or university.
